No problem, man. Sorry for the inconvenience and the trouble. We're trying to keep the ship afloat until the new site is up, but PvX'ers loooove to vandalize when we let them.

The good news is that the new wiki will be better and you won't have to put up with quite as many ungodly ads and the UI will be much easier to use.

Sorry, but I had to laugh when I saw the vandalism to the 6-man IWAY.

I'm confused. I thought the unofficial wiki's free content license didn't allow hosting by a commercial enterprise unless everyone who had ever added so much as a comma gave their approval. Isn't that why we had to build a new wiki to be hosted on the ArenaNet servers?

How have you gotten around that little problem?

Before I type something idiotic in response, could you clarify what you mean by approval? Approval from our users, Wikia, or Anet? (because our licenses could imply all of the above).

EDIT: I assume you meant Anet, but thought I'd ask just in case.

A wiki is set up under a specific free content licensing agreement. (there is more than one type) Back when ArenaNet offered to host the wiki, it was discovered that the license was the type where a move like that required approval of everyone who had ever contributed. That is why a new wiki was created.

There are threads in the guru archives on this.

I found the main thread http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...=ArenaNet+wiki

Ah, I see. Well, we're technically not "moving". Wikia calls it "forking".

Recently Wikia implemented a skin with the primary focus of gaining advertising dollars. The main difference from Monaco or Monobook (besides the fact that it's frustrating to use) is that it has a "Like" and a "Share" button on every page. Because of this, they can sell targeted advertising, the types that make Facebook and Google rich, to advertisers.

Due to all of this, they refuse to shut down our site. So, although the vast majority of our users are moving to Curse, there will still be a [email protected]

However, we garnered consensus for the move about a month ago. Our users are very happy to get away from Wikia, and once the new skin is mandatory on all Wikia sites, you will be too. Trust me.

EDIT: I believe GuildWikia is looking to move as well. Possibly even to Curse.

If I'm following you, you're wondering if the move to Curse violates the content license?

I'm guessing that you're referring to the "Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 2.0" which states:
You may not exercise any of the rights granted to You in Section 3 above in any manner that is primarily intended for or directed toward commercial advantage or private monetary compensation.

As I understand it, what is verboten is if it's hosted as a commercial enterprise, rather than by a commercial company. If that makes any sense. Check out the info page (and the discussion) for clarfication.

Yeah, that's what I was referring to (and I thought that's what Darcy was asking about).

Thanks, jimbo32, I just found the post in the original thread (#192) that has the legal reason it couldn't be done then. So I guess the problem then was ArenaNet wanting to integrate it into the game as the Help function. Sorry for muddying the waters.

Although I haven't contributed to the "unofficial" wiki in a few years, I think anything that keeps it functioning in a useful manner is a great idea.

Don't worry about it. We don't blame you for being curious.

It's been a long battle over the last few months, but Wikia just isn't listening to us or supporting us any more.

They actually demoted all of our bcrats and demoted/banned me recently in order to control our wiki. I was quickly undone (thanks to Mendel), but it still shows how far Wikia is willing to go to keep their ad revenue.

Sorry, I understand this is probably very frustrating for those involved, but some of these builds are hilarious.

I mean the fighting with the wiki hosts must be frustrating, not the vandalization itself.

Look at it this way - assuming the 7-hero/Embark beach thing is released soon-ish, PvX should be back up and nicely organized just in time for the 7-hero team build insanity.

Actually, I've enjoyed the vandalism as well. If you missed my animated .gif background changes, then you missed out.

I just recreated it in the theme editor preview so you guys can see it. Imagine all the little stick figures in the background running around.

Sannse just reverted me repeatedly until she got to the default skin.

Then she demoted me, banned me, demoted our bcrats, and placed a Wikia helper in charge of our wiki

That lasted about a day before our users shitstormed him off the site.

Just leave our frequently used builds alone (like Discoway, Spiritway, etc.) until after we've fully moved and then you're more than welcome to join the fun.

Regardless of any silly skin "vandalism" (if you can even call it that), I find it very interesting that Wikia feels entitled to essentially take control of a supposedly autonomous wiki just because they happen to be the hosts. It would seem (imo anyway) to go against what a wiki is supposed to be.

Which I guess is part of people's problem with Wikia to begin with.

EDIT:
It may be that once these "forks" are completed, that it'll actually be Wikia who is in violation of the Creative Commons license. No matter what they say, the only reason they'll be maintaining the "old" PvX and GuildWiki is as a money-making venture.

The best part is that I had consensus on the skin layout, so reverting it was against the consensus of the wiki (hence the shitstorm).

Mendel was quick to point out that Wikia taking control of our wiki invalidated our licenses as well, which made her undo it quickly.

But, yeah, Wikia is in it for profit and to rape the souls of children, etc. I think I've said all I need to here . Auron may feel the need to add something else, but we'll be announcing the new PvX in a new thread when it's finished (like tomorrow).

...hope this doesn't signify the closing chapter for the main GW wikia. But it's fun to see pvx on wikia going out with a bang. Documenting the trolling is afterall half the fun.
